Thank you for your comment about A K Balfour.

I have tracked very little information about Balfour and the information about Northele was from an article in theYachting Monthly bout the competition to design the £1000 yacht. I always intended to do some more work on his history but it means spending some time in scottish library archives for which I have not yet found the time.

I am glad to hear Northele has neen restored, Someone did mention that she had been in Scotland at some point but I do not have any details.

I will keep you posted if I come across further information.

Good Sailing,

Keith Clark

Hi

I bought and restored Northele in 2002 and I always thought Berthon boat co designed her.
From your very interesting article it was A K Balfour. Would you have any more information on Northele?. I understand she spent some years in Scotland.

regards
John

As former owners of Sanday (1977 -2007) we were very upset to see her in the Caledonian Canal at Inverness this week in a very sad and neglegted looking state with peeling varnish, delaminating hatches and bare patches on the hull. Current owner unknown but apparently been there several years and looking well cared for when she arrived from Kip. I have some mobile phone images if you are interested. "Red Lady" built 1969 based out of Portland.
Keel stepped solid keel, cutter rigged with bowsprit.

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks - Terry.

I've checked and according to Wikipedia Willian Boag of Largs the boat builder is no longer trading so it looks like you'll have to do the repairs yourself.

I remember the triffids well and always advise people to look away when there is going to be a meteor shower.

I saw the picture of Triffid, I think you need to take your boat to the manufacturer. They will repair your boat.

It's not just boats that need TLC over the winter, my tools are looking not so great after a long damp winter this year. As Adrian mentions, ventination is key to stop a lot of problems.

Oh wise words, well wrought, and worth reading (nay, printing and posting on the bathroom mirror).

I can see the slippery slope down which I am determined to slide, and if I forgot my snow shoes in my haste to put on rose-tinted specs, then so be it.

I will be going into the restoration, in other words, with rose-tinted eyes wide open, which means that I know the Flying Fifteen will turn out to be a can of worms, and I know it will take three time as long as intended, and cost four times as much.

I have written too many times of infatuation and old boats. At least this one will fit inside my shed, rather than rot in the garden.

But I have noted your warning, and will not blame anyone but myself three months down the line.

But just look at that mahogany planking...
